The Flawed Series

Flawed is a New Adult series about people with super-human weaknesses, and each book focuses on a different main character, though the characters intermingle between the books. Each individual's flaw also has an upside--sort of like on Heroes or X-Men, though this series is geared more toward Romance fans. I would classify it as Romantic Urban Fantasy with a side of Suspense.

Empath

The Places You Don’t Want To Go: A guest post by author Kourtney Heintz

Before I get started, I just want to thank Kayla for letting me write a guest post on her blog! *Big Wave*

Writing about a world where out-of-control telepathy existed sounded so cool; but writing from the point of view of an out-of-control telepath named Kai didn’t.

I had no idea how to get inside her mind and not get lost there. So I stayed on the periphery telling everything from the perspective of my other protagonist, her husband, Oliver.

It was easier to learn about her powers from him. To understand her through his eyes.

So I let Oliver be the point-of-view character for most of The Six Train to Wisconsin. As her abilities came under control, I reached a point where the story required her to be the narrator. Only then did I plunge into Kai’s point of view. And it was thrilling. Her powers affected her perception and her thought patterns. Her abilities intertwined with her so deeply and enriched her character so much.

I fell deeply in love with her character and realized I was doing a huge disservice to Kai. By refusing to go into her point of view in the beginning, my readers missed out on a key element of who she was. Or at least who she could be in her worst moments. The telling moments.

After I finished my third round of revisions, I knew Kai so well, I felt nearly certain I was up to the task of capturing her at her worst and still telling the story. I struggled with how much of her powers would eclipse a scene and how to not have the powers front and center all the time.

This wasn’t simply a story about telepathy. This was a story about a woman whose out-of-control ability threatened her life and a husband whose secret threatened their future. So I had to pick and chose the moments where her ability took center stage and the moments that it had to be a background player to the emotions or the plot.

There were times I had to go back and add more details about her abilities and other places I had to scale back. Sometimes I got so into how the powers worked I’d lose myself in them. It’s a dangerous path for a writer. Just because you’re enamored with the mechanisms of your world building doesn’t mean anyone else is.

One of the hardest things was figuring out ways to limit her abilities. I played with the idea of shield. The telepathy could reside in the background when she formed a psychic shield. Others could block her out with their shields. I didn’t want her powers to remove the opportunity for confusion and misunderstandings. In fact, I wanted them to exacerbate them.

In the end, the character that was the hardest to write became my favorite one. She challenged me and made me a better a writer. And I am so grateful that I stepped outside my comfort zone and into hers.

On this day in Moonstone . . . #5

So, on April 30, 2013 in Moonstone, this happens . . .


“No, Aila. It’s not a joke. I drink blood. I wanted to drink yours. Andrei will want to drink your blood. I’m a vampire and I can prove it, but I don’t want to scare you. That’s why I’m telling you now. He’ll try to tear us apart, but I know you are the one to break my curse.”

“How would you prove it?” Aila asked reluctantly.

“There are a few ways, but the easiest would be if I showed you my fangs, but that’s not a good idea. Don’t worry—I have sworn to myself that I would not drink from you. I don’t want to drink human blood anymore, but it’s the only way I can survive right now.”

Aila seemed to think it over for a moment. She hadn’t suspected anything. Her whole point of view on everything was changing. Dorin didn’t know if it would be in a good way or a disastrous way, but her words came out calmly when she said, “I think I want you to show me. Not because I think you are crazy, but to prove to myself that I am not crazy for believing you.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m ready.”

Dorin opened his mouth and tried to bring out his fangs as slow as possible to show her that he had control and to try not to scare her. Two sharp, white teeth slowly descended from the spot his canines were in. Aila’s curiosity peeked as she stared at them for a long moment with her mouth wide open.

“I felt it,” she said.

Dorin retracted his fangs and asked, “Felt what?”

“I felt the ring push you away. First at the desk . . . and then again in the elevator . . . and when I went to your room to help you with the thermostat. I didn’t wear it on our first date. Then I felt it when you picked me up for our second date. You had me take it off at the museum . . . Oh, my.”

“Yes, I did, but I returned it to you.”

“Yes, but you had so many chances. Why didn’t you . . .”

“I wanted to, but I just couldn’t. You were too perfect. You are too perfect. I can’t ruin the one thing that has brought me humanity in the last 250 years,” Dorin replied.

Aila woke to her alarm clock. Immediately she looked around for Dorin, her heart fluttering. Disappointment crossed her face when she realized he was gone, and then she found the note. Her heart pounded again, she couldn’t stand the thought of him leaving her. As she read the note, she realized she shouldn’t have worried.

Aila,
I hope you slept well. I left last night because I knew you weren’t ready for me to stay the night quite yet. I wanted to be respectful of your wishes, so I made sure you were comfortable and went to my room. I hope I did the right thing. Today we set off for Jacksonville. Please join me for breakfast if you wish. I know you always wake at seven, so I will be by at eight to wish you good morning in person.
Dorin

Aila breathed a sigh of relief. She was happy to see that he hadn’t decided to leave without her. She couldn’t wait to see him again. With excitement as her fuel to get going, she got dressed and put on her make-up in only half an hour. She had her bags packed by the time a knock came at her door. She rushed to greet Dorin with a smile on her face.

When she opened the door, there he was, smiling and leaning on the entrance way wall in the sexy manner he always did. His dark hair fell to his cheek and his perfect teeth showed through his smile. His brown eyes stared into hers and held her blue eyes captive.

“Good morning,” Aila managed to say.

Dorin kissed her and whispered, “Good morning, my dear.”

Once they were back in the hotel, Dorin and Aila ended up in her room watching movies and eventually ordering some room service. They cuddled on her couch and talked more than they watched, but Dorin didn’t care. He just wanted to know her. He needed to know every detail of her life. They asked each other questions about their favorite things and past experiences. Dorin tried to be as truthful as he could, but he couldn’t reveal everything quite yet. He planned to tell her before they arrived in Miami, but the time wasn’t right tonight.

At some point, Aila fell asleep on the couch nestled against his chest. He debated staying with her through the night, but at lunch she’d made it clear that she wasn’t quite ready for that yet, so he gently picked her up and placed her in her bed. Before he left, he wrote a note to her and left it on her table, kissing her forehead before leaving her room for his.

His thirst returned, his emergency blood had not lasted long and he needed blood before their trip tomorrow. He couldn’t make himself hurt another innocent person. The thought of going to the crime riddled side of town and drinking from someone who deserved to die hit him. But, the taste of a man’s blood was unappetizing and so was the thought of hurting any woman no matter how horrible a human she was. This repulsion was new to him, as if a switch had been flipped. He’d become one of those vampires that break into local blood banks. He flipped open the phone book in his room to search for a Red Cross.

Aila had been extremely impressed by Dorin’s efforts today. The amount of money he must have spent had to be enormous. She wondered why he would do such a thing for a woman he’d just met. Perhaps he did this with a lot of women. They were headed back to the hotel, so she would have to figure it out soon. She hated herself for the questions she was about to ask, but promised herself that if the answers were right, she’d find a way to bring back the romantic mood of the evening.

“Dorin,” Aila began, “Why did you go to such lengths to impress me tonight?”

He was obviously caught off guard by the question but he answered, “Honestly, there is something about you that draws me in—makes me want to see you smile. You are so different than Romanian women and American women. I can’t explain my attraction, it’s just—Ai aprins flacarea in inima mea—you’ve lighted up the fire in my heart.”

Aila couldn’t believe her ears. He had the perfect answer, the fact that she’d doubted him made her feel like she’d been untrusting without reason. She did the only thing she could think of to make up for her silly inquiry. In the backseat of the hired car, with the privacy window up, she kissed him with more passion than she’d ever experienced before. He kissed her back with as much power and passion as she’d wanted.

And so, on April 26, 2013 in Moonstone, this happens:

Dorin stood in line at the upscale hotel while two very busy front desk clerks tried to check in the waiting guests. He was fourth in line, and the woman who was second in line had caught his eye. She was thin with long blonde hair, which was pulled back into a loose ponytail, and she had bright blue eyes. She was here on business judging from her black skirt and blouse. 

Finally, the man in front of Dorin doing a funny little dance lost his patience and walked towards the bathrooms.

That’s when Dorin first caught the intoxicating scent of the woman in black. Now third in line, he knew he had a limited amount of time to make conversation. He noticed she wore only one piece of jewelry. How could he not when its force was strongly pushing him away from her? It was a ring that would make it hard for him to get to her—not a wedding ring, but something much more ominous. She acted as if she didn’t know what it did. If she did know, then she would have noticed him. Enlightened people always notice him. They usually say nothing since people would only laugh and call them crazy if they started shouting, "Vampire!"

“That’s a very unique ring you are wearing,” he stated. He was testing the limits. She looked up at him with her big blue eyes and smiled.

“Thank you, my grandmother gave it to me. She carved it herself from a seashell,” she replied.

He could feel its force even stronger now. Pushing him away. Not because she was afraid, but because he wanted to taste her blood and the vampire spirit inside of the ring knew it. The spirit was warning his subconscious mind to stay away, therefore physically pushing Dorin away from her. The fact that he couldn’t harm her because of his curse was the only reason he’d gotten this close to her to begin with. Dorin knew he wouldn’t stay away for long, but the ring would have to come off. The curse was only a small problem. Once she kissed him, she would be his.

A to Z Challenge: Day 16: P is for Princess Avenger

Queensland Vet Turns Romance Writer

By day, Queenslander Bernadette Rowley is a vet. By night she throws off her white coat and stethoscope and becomes a romance writer.

I had to laugh when my editor sent me this press release but it’s quite true. It’s like I have an alter ego and the two seem quite diametrically opposed. They’re not really, though the right side of my brain doesn’t get much of a workout in my job as a vet. Writing, however, requires both sides of the brain to be working in concert albeit not at the same time. The creative right brain is very much in control when I’m crafting a story draft whereas the left side comes to the fore when it’s time to edit.

When I was first introduced to my romance writing community, I was staggered to find that many romance writers were highly-functioning career women. I met bankers, teachers, lawyers and doctors, to name just a few occupations. Then I realized that romance writing (and reading) was therapy- an escape from the high stress of their daily grind. What could be more therapeutic than immersing oneself in a fantasy romance after a hard day dealing with illnesses and emergencies?

I’ve read almost exclusively fantasy since my teenage years so it was natural for me to choose the fantasy/paranormal genre when I ventured into romance writing. Because I’ve lived in the worlds of Tolkien, Eddings, Feist and Jordan for decades, it’s easy to ‘see’ my fantasy in line with these fabulous authors. I love creating my own fabulous world where I make the magic and anything is possible. But I’m not a slave to world-building. My creation is not so developed that it has character status. I give enough information to allow the reader to imagine the rest. No one wants to read through reams of elaborate descriptions. It just needs to make sense.

Writing is one job where you very definitely learn a lot about yourself and even more so when you succeed in gaining publication. You get asked questions by editors and readers which really cause you to stop and think. I often get asked why I don’t write veterinary stories. My immediate reaction is always violent opposition. I have no interest in writing contemporary stories with a vet as main character. However, animals form an important part of my stories and worlds; only they’re not just boring cats and dogs (though who could say cats are boring!). My debut novel Princess Avenger is a fantasy romance about a forbidden love affair between a kick-ass princess and a shape-shifting army captain who is appointed her protector. The two are irresistibly drawn to each other amidst danger, deceit, palace intrigue and a plot to kill the princess’s father. What could be more natural than a vet who writes fantasy about a hero who can shift into three wild animal forms?

In addition, because my fantasy has a high fantasy setting, horses are integral to the everyday lives of the characters. So the animals I use in my fiction may not be the ones I see at work but are very much at the heart of it. In the next and related story, my heroine has a rather special connection to her horse and must use her special healing talents on him when his leg is broken. So I guess the reality of our ‘day jobs’ often resonates in our writing, in some way.

You've read paranormal fiction, but have you watched paranormal non-fiction?

I have something really exciting planned for you today! This week, I interviewed the founder of a team of paranormal investigators that are based in my home state, Nebraska!

T.R.I.P., short for Tri-City Research and Investigation of the Paranormal, is a team from Hastings, Nebraska who have traveled all around the state to investigate strange happenings and tales of ghosts.

I've visted their website many times, and I've found that this team remains very professional and truthful. Nothing is staged and everything is real. At the end of each video you'll either see that they have declared the investigation site haunted, or declare that they were unable to gather sufficient evidence of a haunting and must return to the site at a later date to try to gather more evidence.

Here are my questions, and the answers from the founder, Nate Raterman:

[Me] First, can you tell us a little about your team and what you do?


[Nate] Well to start off, I'm Nate Raterman and I'm the founder of our team, Tri-City Research and Investigation of the Paranormal (T.R.I.P.) We started back in 2009 in Hastings, NE. We are a team of paranormal researchers that conduct paranormal investigations for free to educate the community by providing truthful facts and evidence to our clients and the public.


[Me] So, what kind of equipment do you use?


[Nate] We have lots of equipment that we use such as a DVR system with 8 IR Cams for darkness, KII meters, Audio recorders, Video cameras, Digital cameras, Laser grids, EMF meters and much more!


[Me] What are the most common types of evidence of activity?


[Nate] Intelligent haunting, they interact by: opening a door, footsteps, voices, things being moved.


[Me] How long do you spend at an investigation site on average?


[Nate] 7 to 10 hrs


[Me] What goes though your mind as you investigate these places?


[Nate] To keep an open mind and see if anything can be disproved.


[Me] If you were offered your own television show on a major network channel, would you do it? Why or why not?


[Nate] Yes, I would under TRIP guide lines. TV shows like to fake some things and the only way we would ever go on TV would be if it's done by providing truthful facts and evidence to the viewers.


[Me] So, what got you started in paranormal investigations?


[Nate] I had a paranormal experience years ago, I was living in a old home and seen a figure and since then I have been wanting to find out more and to show everyone else.


[Me] In all of your experiences, which one has shown you the most compelling evidence that the paranormal exists?


[Nate] Well there are many that we have been on that have shown compelling evidence but the main one would be the Arrow Hotel in Broken Bow NE We got a figure on film and many personal experiences such as seeing shadow figures and things being moved etc.

The metal elevator doors glided open to the luxurious seventeenth floor of the Herrick-Peyton building. Fresh, colorful hibiscus flowers welcomed Ava as she stepped into the reception area. She glanced around and made eye contact with the man she was looking for: Tom Walker. His face lit up when he saw her, and his handsome grin made Ava’s own smile spread across her face.

“Miss Tanner, what brings you up to the seventeenth floor?” Mr. Walker asked.

“Well, it’s been almost a year since you signed your last lease, and since you seem so comfortable up here, I thought I’d bring up the renewal papers,” Ava said as she looked around the lobby.

“Wonderful! Let’s step into my office, shall we? I’ll sign them right away. Otherwise, they’ll get lost on my desk.”

Ava nodded and followed Tom to his office. He stopped short and let her enter first as he gently placed a hand on the small of her back. Butterflies erupted in her stomach.

He closed the door behind them and gestured at one of the guest chairs while taking the packet of papers from her. She could smell his cologne as he approached her. It reminded her of rain and fresh cut grass. He took a seat behind his large desk, which shined in the sunlight from the window behind him.

“So the papers would get lost on your desk, huh?” Ava asked.

“Well, I might have exaggerated a bit,” he replied. Silence followed as he flipped through the pages of the lease.

He cleared his throat, “So, since I’m signing papers—”

“Oh, no. Let’s not start that, Mr. Walker. You know I can’t work for you,” Ava said, before he got the question out.

“How did you know?” He grinned.

“You ask me every time we see each other.”

“I wish we would see each other more often. Then maybe I would wear you down.”

“I just don’t think I’d fit in at Psytech, and I like where I am now,” Ava replied.

Tom sighed. “I know you do. I just can’t figure out why.”

The pen dragged on the last page of the renewal papers as Tom signed his name with a flourish. He stood and rounded the desk with a predatory look on his face. It was one that Ava had seen often. She couldn’t convince herself it was only the look of a man who wanted her to work for him. To her, it sometimes seemed that he wanted so much more. She took a deep breath as he came closer. She was about to stand, but he surprised her by sitting in the guest seat next to her.

“I hope that one day you will say yes to me. Psytech could really use you—I could really use you.”

The creature gazed hungrily at an adolescent female who staggered down the dark residential street. Marveling at human recklessness, he tracked the youth, noting the headphones in her ears and the faltering gait of the inebriated.

The creature did not comprehend a human’s proclivity to intoxicate or anesthetize oneself. Blood alcohol level on this prey was minimal and the contamination could be rectified. Sweet, young, practically unpolluted, unsullied by years of chemical additives and contagions. The creature could not resist. An easy mark. Another  teenager who disappears without a trace.

The creature swooped down, landing lightly on the ground behind her. The girl, music blasting from her headphones, was oblivious. With a quick movement, he grabbed the girl by her ponytail, clamped a hand over her mouth, and dragged her into the bushes.

Feisty, this one, the creature thought, as his victim struggled and thrashed about.

A quick punch to the stomach took all the fight out of her. He slapped duct tape over her mouth and bound her wrists together. Annoyed by her whimpering, the creature smashed her skull against the concrete sidewalk; his mouth watering from the metallic scent of blood as it oozed from her head.

After hoisting her over his shoulder, he ascended high into the sky before heading toward the beach. Moments later, he deposited the young girl on the damp sand. Awake now, the girl began to stir and moan. Her horror increased as she became conscious, her head rolling back and forth, as the creature lifted up her shirt and used a knife to slice away a lacy bra. Wide eyes followed the blue blade as it traced the skin above her left breast, blood flowing from the shallow incision. Bending over, the creature delicately licked the blood from her breast, savoring every drop of the precious fluid. Annoyed that her silent screams ruined his enjoyment, he decided to finish his task. With the next cut, he opened the chest cavity.

Containers secured and filled with the organs, he grasped the dead girl by one ankle and flew skyward. Several miles out to sea, he let go.

The body of the young woman would never be found.

 I'm an author, blogger, wife, mother, dog-owner, and an International Baccalaureate Language Arts teacher.

I love wine, chocolate, ice cream, cheese, cheese puffs ( see the trend?), and ethnic food–from Indian to Ecuadorian to Greek to Italian. Actually, I just love food!  Exercise? Not so much. The treadmill sits in the garage and I manage to get on it a few times a week while watching Bones on NETFLIX.

I’ve always been amazed by the links between ancient history and mythology. The two are so closely intertwined we don’t often make a distinction between them. And modern scientific theories only continue to prove the existence of the weird and fantastical!

5 Reasons I've Become a Bad Blog Host

Hey guys! I'm so sorry I haven't been posting much lately! Here are my excuses and a few solutions:

Excuses:

1. I've been hard at work on Moonstone: Mystic Stones Series #2, Ruby: A Mystic Stones Jewel, and Vibe: Grey Apathy. That's one novel and two short stories. The good news? I'm finished with Moonstone for now and Ruby is just about done, which leaves Vibe: Grey Apathy at about 30% done.
2. I just finished Blogger Book Fair and I have to get data together so I can run the next one more efficiently. The good news? Most everything is getting squared away.
3. I'm running out of ideas on what to post on this blog. Anyone have anything paranormal related that they would like to discuss?
4. I've just been plain lazy. I have a review that I need to write, but I'm unsure on what to say.
5. I've been cheating on this blog with my other blog, the Pepper Press where I write about marketing books.

Solutions? Well, I would love some suggestions an what YOU want to see on the Paranormal Lounge. I'll also be participating in the A-Z Challenge in April, so that means there will be at least 26 posts on here in April.

So, to tide you over while I get it together, lets talk about Twilight and Warm Bodies!

I haven't seen Breaking Dawn Part 2 yet, but I assure you I will be getting it when it comes out on March 2nd. Anyone else buying the DVD? I'm sure most of you have already seen it in theaters. I have all the other DVDs and I saw all the rest of the movies in the theater.

For some reason, I wasn't as excited for Part 2. It might just be the whole Kristin Stewart fiasco, where she cheated on Rob. I know they are back together, and I know people make mistakes, but I think it did kinda ruin the excitement for me a little. How about you?

On to Warm Bodies. Has anyone read the book and seen the movie? I've only seen the movie and I LOVED IT!! Yeah. Valentine's Day date with the husband and we went to that movie. We both liked it a lot. It's such a new and refreshing take on Zombies. What's your opinion?
