The creature gazed hungrily at an adolescent female who staggered down the dark residential street. Marveling at human recklessness, he tracked the youth, noting the headphones in her ears and the faltering gait of the inebriated.

The creature did not comprehend a human’s proclivity to intoxicate or anesthetize oneself. Blood alcohol level on this prey was minimal and the contamination could be rectified. Sweet, young, practically unpolluted, unsullied by years of chemical additives and contagions. The creature could not resist. An easy mark. Another  teenager who disappears without a trace.

The creature swooped down, landing lightly on the ground behind her. The girl, music blasting from her headphones, was oblivious. With a quick movement, he grabbed the girl by her ponytail, clamped a hand over her mouth, and dragged her into the bushes.

Feisty, this one, the creature thought, as his victim struggled and thrashed about.

A quick punch to the stomach took all the fight out of her. He slapped duct tape over her mouth and bound her wrists together. Annoyed by her whimpering, the creature smashed her skull against the concrete sidewalk; his mouth watering from the metallic scent of blood as it oozed from her head.

After hoisting her over his shoulder, he ascended high into the sky before heading toward the beach. Moments later, he deposited the young girl on the damp sand. Awake now, the girl began to stir and moan. Her horror increased as she became conscious, her head rolling back and forth, as the creature lifted up her shirt and used a knife to slice away a lacy bra. Wide eyes followed the blue blade as it traced the skin above her left breast, blood flowing from the shallow incision. Bending over, the creature delicately licked the blood from her breast, savoring every drop of the precious fluid. Annoyed that her silent screams ruined his enjoyment, he decided to finish his task. With the next cut, he opened the chest cavity.

Containers secured and filled with the organs, he grasped the dead girl by one ankle and flew skyward. Several miles out to sea, he let go.

The body of the young woman would never be found.

 I'm an author, blogger, wife, mother, dog-owner, and an International Baccalaureate Language Arts teacher.

I love wine, chocolate, ice cream, cheese, cheese puffs ( see the trend?), and ethnic food–from Indian to Ecuadorian to Greek to Italian. Actually, I just love food!  Exercise? Not so much. The treadmill sits in the garage and I manage to get on it a few times a week while watching Bones on NETFLIX.

I’ve always been amazed by the links between ancient history and mythology. The two are so closely intertwined we don’t often make a distinction between them. And modern scientific theories only continue to prove the existence of the weird and fantastical!

An avid reader, I savor well crafted, witty prose that makes me laugh, challenges conventionality, and stirs the imagination. An intriguing mystery-thriller, historical fiction, or urban fantasy will have me reading into the wee hours of the night.

When Principal, Abby Davies, shows Curtis a page of scribbles and asks him to try to figure it out, Curtis isn’t sure what to think. He likes Miss D and all. She isn’t too bad for a school teacher. You can talk to her and she doesn’t make fun. But, sheesh, a secret code from aliens? That’s just too scifi for him. To keep her happy, he says he’ll help. Thing is, once he starts studying the scribbles, he can see messages.

Coder Guy, as Abby calls whoever is sending the messages, wants her to fix things. What things? Abby and Curtis find the answer when letters with Abby’s signature appear in newspaper offices. The things asked for come true. But, who’s writing the letters? Coder Guy?Or Abby?

Then the reporter shows up. What is a war correspondent doing in their little town? He says he loves Abby, but he sells her story to the world; her face splashed over every television and computer screen. The next day Miss D and Curtis are the only ones who remember the reports.

That’s when real fear sets in.

Meanwhile, Yves, who fell in love with Em, has loved her through her life as Jasmine, still loves her in this life as Abby. He fumes as one of the rookie gods fumbles communication with her. Once again, Yves breaks the rules to help Abby, but with deadly results.

The Excerpt:

 

“More drawings?” Curtis gestured at the papers she held.

 

Abby looked down at the pages and willed her hand to stop trembling. The three pages of code drawings seemed to shimmer and shiver with a life of their own. “Yes. Three pages. From Friday, Saturday, and last night. They’re pretty … they’re … pretty well done, I’d say.”

 

But Curtis was no longer listening. He waved the papers she’d just handed him and almost shouted with excitement. “These are amazing. Way better than the first drawing you brought us.”

 

Abby stifled a small grin, but she had to agree. The drawings outclassed her scratches a million times over. “My friend developed instant artistic talent.”

 

“I’ll say.” Curtis shuffled the pages back and forth. He shook his head slowly and muttered “wow” over and over. Finally he looked up at her. “Miss D, thanks for getting so many. Now we have four to compare. We’ll see if there are any repeated patterns or sequences of symbols. Your friend is great to share these with us.”

 

“No problem.” Oh God, I’m such a liar. Of course there was a problem, and not just because she was lying to Curtis. My friend. How lame was that? The mere existence of the pages was the real problem. Some nights the clickings chattered incessantly in her fillings, almost driving her crazy. Those were the nights of very little sleep. The weekend had been eerily silent. That was a new phenomenon since Friday, no clickings, instead Coder Guy had begun leaving the pages filled with drawings. Either way—no escaping the code.

 

A while back, she’d grown tired of sharpening the pencil she used each night and replaced it with a pen, which was now almost out of ink. She’d have to remember to get out a new one tonight. Or maybe not? What would happen if there was no writing utensil?

 

“What’s so funny?” Curtis asked. Abby hadn’t realized she’d laughed out loud. The lack of pen wouldn’t stop her night visitor. She stifled another burst of laughter she knew bordered on hysteria. Truth was, much as the pages of code scared her, she’d be devastated if no more came. The person—being, alien, Coder Guy—was an integral part of her life now; his existence had established a rhythm that kept her balanced. Or so she thought. Maybe she was completely off her rocker.

 

Whatever the case, she didn’t want to lose that contact. Coder Guy’s presence warmed her, kept her from feeling alone and lonely. Oh, man, I am losing it here. Really losing it.

INTERLUDE: 1652

Alexander had left his wife in St. Andrews to travel to Edinburgh for a fortnight. The excuse he offered was weak, but Maggie was too young to question him. He whistled as he rode his horse, eager to get back to the thriving metropolis that he visited infrequently.

His mother’s family had kin at court, and as a child, these distant relations had given Alexander an excuse to visit Edinburgh, but that wasn’t why he was bound there now.

Alexander Nairn wanted to get stinking drunk.

He could have gone out carousing in St. Andrews. His school friends were still about, and Maggie wouldn’t have stopped him. But his in-laws were alive, and Alexander felt their ever-watchful eyes whenever he set foot outside of his rooms in the village. It was positively disconcerting, and he was getting jumpy.

So Alexander did the only thing he could think of: he fled the city and headed for Edinburgh, where no one would know about the scandal he had brought down upon the Keys. He arrived as night fell, after two days of traveling, and his horse steered him immediately to a pub. He made a note to give the beast some extra sugar, but his gratitude was lost by his second tankard of ale.

“Why does the woman torment me?” He asked the other men around him, but none answered. Alexander stared into his cup. “She’s bewitched me. The woman is the very devil.”

“There’s no such thing as witchcraft, man. Buck up.” A young man about Alexander’s age thumped his shoulder, and Alexander scowled.

“You don’t know what you’re speaking of.” He flicked his hand as if shooing a fly, but the other man didn’t budge.

“I do know. I’m a man of science, and I tell you, there’s no such thing as witches.”

Alexander teetered to his feet. “Until you have been bewitched, sir, I don’t want to hear your cracked theories.” He staggered toward the door, but he only made it a few steps before the stranger leapt in front of him.

“You dare to call me a crackpot?”

Alexander grinned. “A man who does not believe in magic is either the biggest fool alive, or the biggest liar.” He didn’t see the first punch coming, but once his head stopped ringing, Alexander gave as good as he got.

Finally, by the time the tavern keeper and a few strong lads pitched them both into the street, Alexander was missing a tooth and the young stranger had a black eye. They landed together, face down in the muddy street, and for a moment, they were still.

The stranger started to laugh as he pulled himself to his feet. He held out his hand to his battered companion. “We’d best get you cleaned up. Witchcraft won’t fix that tooth.”

It was then that Alexander’s friendship with Doctor Ferguson began.

To say that the vampire myth has seen a resurgence in popular culture lately is a painful understatement. It’s gotten to the point where literary agents cringe when they read a query about another “teen vampire paranormal romance.”

Still, that doesn’t make vampires any less awesome. The fangs, the immortality, the dark humans-are-food thing…vampires rock.

But when I wrote the paranormal fantasy Lichgates (Grimoire Trilogy #1), I knew I wanted something different. Vampires had exploded in popularity, but I wanted to do something fresh. Exciting. New.

So I created isen.

Isen are soul stealers. For every soul they steal, they extend their youth and lives by ten years. An isen essentially becomes what they steal—they can take on their victim’s appearance at will, use the victim’s knowledge or skills, and even talk like them. Isen can be anywhere, and they can be anyone.

Of course, there’s a cost. Every stolen soul lives somewhere deep within their mind, trapped and rattling around. The more souls an isen steals, the closer to insanity they get.

If you’re an isen, you have a barb hidden in your right palm. It’s a long, purple thing that extends when you want to steal a soul—and all you have to do is stab your victim’s spine with the barb. Sometimes, your very faint scent that smells something like lavender and pine gives you away. But most of the time, you get your victims.

Being an isen is in your blood—you have to be born an isen. But many born isen don’t know what they are until their teens, when they’re awoken…and awakening is a painful experience. An already-awoken isen has to find you, prick your spine with their soul-stealing barb, and then kill you.

You meet Death: the blood-red guardian of the afterlife. And If you can prove that you have a life left to live, he’ll send you back—as a fully awakened and very powerful isen.

It’s a rough life filled with tragedy, but to some, the unlimited power is worth it.

NaNoWriMo! The Final Day!

Well, do you want the good news or the bad news? Just kidding, that's something my husband always says. I'll give 'em both to you and let's start with the bad news otherwise the good news won't make any sense!

Bad News: I'm not going to hit 50,000 this year. It just isn't going to happen.

Good News: I'm not really that disappointed. I predict that I'll get to around 40,000 words before today is over. That's 40k in 30 days! That is awesome and amazing! Sure I won last year and I wanted to win so bad this year, but at least I got a really good head start on book three.

I'm not making excuses, but let's take a look at why I didn't hit 50,000.

• 3 month old baby. Yep, there he is just kicking around on the floor. He's chewing on his fingers and cooing up a storm. This time is his life is a time I can barely take my eyes off him.
• 3 year old boy. He's learning new things and loves to play pretend. What kind of mother would I be if I didn't pet invisible kitties when they were handed to me? He is an awesome kid who doesn't get into much trouble, but he also doesn't take naps like he did last year.
• 25 year old husband. Sure he sleeps in a lot, but when he's awake and home I am one of those wives who like to spend time with her husband and his parents. We go to their house a few times a week so I don't go crazy from being a stay-at-home mom.
• Nanoartisans and 99designs. Recently I've gotten into cover design. So throughout the month when I'd feel that creative vibe start to whither away on the Language Art side of things, I'd head over to Nanoartisans forum and make a cover. It was through this forum that I found 99designs.com which is a site when people in need of designs for book covers, merchandise, logos and all sorts of other stuff post contest for designers and if you win you get prize money.
• Birthdays and Holidays. This month I had three birthday parties (which pretty much turn into an all day event when you have kids) and of course Thanksgiving. We had 3 Thanksgivings. So, yeah.

Anyways, as you can see I'm a very busy woman. I have tons of stuff on my plate and I don't even have a "real" job. Which reminds me. Marketing my book is a "real" job. I just don't get paid to do it. Not hourly anyways. Eventually my hard work will pay off, but in the mean time I have a checklist of stuff I have to do everyday, every week and a big project each month. NaNoWriMo was my big project this month. In December I'll be finishing up edits on Moonstone (book 2) and sending it to my publisher.

So how did you do? Even if you didn't hit 50,000 you still got words on the page and that is what matters. Congratulations either way, because not everyone can do what we do. Now that NaNoWriMo is over, be prepared for lots of Christmas posts with a Paranormal twist of course! Christmas is my birthday, so this time of year is my favorite! This year is even my "Lucky" birthday since I'm turning 25 on the 25th.
